Our goals at Darna are to inspire, empower, and educate individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery, playful exploration, and continual growth. Our aim is to help individuals become their own "home body", teacher, and healer. We guide and support each person to tap into their unique story, experience, creativity and imagination, which in turn helps them find their inner strength and courage to change whatever hasn't been working.
Each one of us is inherently driven toward and has the capacity for growth and self-actualization and is the expert on our own life. This non-directive approach empowers the person to actively take the reins during each session while the therapist acts mainly as a guide or a source of support.
“The commitment within the person-centred approach [is] to dismantling the structural distribution of power within society.”
― David Murphy
Trauma-informed therapist considers the complex impact of trauma on an individual's well-being and how it shapes a person's ability to cope in their day-to-day life and its impact on their senses, body and nervous system. The question is always "What happened to me" rather than "What is wrong with me". The therapist creates a sense of safety and moves at a pace that feels comfortable for the person.
"We cannot recover until we become familiar with and befriend the sensations in our bodies." ― Bessel A. van der Kolk
Culturally sensitive therapists emphasize on understanding a client’s background and belief system as it relates to their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other important elements that make up someone’s culture and/or identity. It also allows the therapist to gain and maintain cultural competence in understanding their own culture and how it influences their therapeutic relations with clients.
Our bodies and senses are the vessels through which we experience life, and it is through them that we can find healing and growth. The effects of our experiences are not just stored in our minds but also in our bodies. By approaching therapy from a somatic perspective, we can tap into this innate intelligence and deepen our mind-body connection. Ultimately, this can lead to a more profound sense of healing and transformation.
I'm a professional Art and Music therapist and a Social Worker. I completed my art therapy Training with the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute and my music therapy training with Atelier de Musicotherpie de Bordeaux. I'm a registered therapeutic counsellor (RTC) with ACCT and am working on becoming a registered Art therapist.
I have been working in the mental health sector for over a decade now. Over these years, I have gained extensive experience and knowledge in helping those who have been through complex traumas. Specifically, my focus has been on helping individuals who have lived through or survived wars, conflict zones and natural disasters. I have had the privilege of working with individuals across all age groups, from children to adults and seniors from different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds.
Through my years of experience, I have gained a profound understanding of the distinct challenges that individuals who have undergone traumatic experiences face. Moreover, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the positive effects of artistic expression in the process of healing from such experiences. I have honed my skills to provide personalized care to each individual by developing tailored treatment plans based on their specific needs. My primary goal is to help each person I work with regain a sense of control over their lives, restore their self-confidence, and empower them to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
As humans, we are born with a natural inclination towards creative expression. Creative Arts therapy can help us reconnect with ourselves and our inherent creativity. It provides a gentle way to explore who we are, discover any parts of ourselves that we have split off, and work through any "frozen" or "stuck" parts that have arisen as a result of trauma.
I will be honoured to be part of your healing journey. If this is something you'd like to do together… I can listen, witness, guide, and create with you. We can explore tools and processes to support your movement into and through it all. I will be in it with you, collaborating.
